Oncode Institute congratulates Prof. René Bernards on receiving the People’s Republic of China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award.
René received the award during the 2025 State Science and Technology Awards ceremony in Beijing, in the presence of President Xi Jinping and Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang. The award recognises foreign scientists who have made an important contribution to international scientific collaboration with China.
René Bernards received the award for the longstanding collaboration between his research group at the NKI and Oncode Institute and scientists at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Renji Hospital. The collaboration focuses on the development of new therapeutic approaches for liver cancer. It has already contributed to two promising experimental therapies that are being explored in early clinical trials. The partnership is also built on the active exchange of scientific talent. Over the past decade, several young scientists have trained in the Bernards laboratory, with some now leading their own research groups in Shanghai and continuing the collaboration.

“This award is a wonderful recognition of many years of collaboration with our colleagues in Shanghai. It shows what long-term scientific partnerships can achieve: combining expertise, training young researchers and working together to translate fundamental insights into new treatment opportunities for patients.”
René Bernards and Xuexiang Ding Vice Premier of China
This recognition highlights the power of international research collaboration. It shows how long-term scientific partnerships, knowledge exchange and fundamental cancer research can help turn new insights into new possibilities for patients.
Congratulations to René Bernards and all collaborators involved.
