Finally live: looking back at the single-molecule imaging masterclass
On Thursday, 24 March 2022, at the NKI, we finally held a live masterclass again! This was the first masterclass on location since November 2019: an event organized by Oncode Investigators Marvin Tanenbaum (Hubrecht Institute) and Tineke Lenstra (NKI) with a guest lecture by Lukas Kapitein (Utrecht University).
2022. 04. 07.

During this interactive and informal masterclass, the participants took part in presentations held by the organizers and their group members. The presentations included an overview of different single-molecule imaging modalities such as single-molecule RNA FISH, single-molecule tracking, live-cell imaging of transcription and translation, 3D orbital tracking, and imaging of viral infection with nanobodies. During the presentations, post-docs from both organizing groups discussed applications, opportunities, and challenges of the above-mentioned modalities. Special attention from the organizers’ side was given to the opportunities for collaboration and support.

Our guest speaker was Lukas Kapitein who was recently awarded with a NWO Vici grant. He delivered a great presentation on super-resolution microscopy of cellular organization in health and disease.

The second part of this Masterclass consisted of rotation sessions which included a tour and a demo led by the Lenstra group of the Oncode-financed orbital trap microscope. The microscope is available and can be used by all Oncode members.

The participants got their hands dirty during two data analysis assignments, and their ideas rolling during a brainstorm session in which they could explain their ideas and challenges to other participants and the two experts, Marvin Tanenbaum and Tineke Lenstra, after which they received valuable feedback to move their experiments forward. This part of the masterclass was found to be particularly useful and highly appreciated by the participants.

This science-driven and technological masterclass has proven the importance of live events where participants can informally meet new people, network and think of potential new collaborations between institutes.

Our next Masterclass on the topic of Nuclear organization in development and disease, organized by Oncode Investigators Elzo de Wit (NKI) and Ruud Delwel (Erasmus MC), will take place on Tuesday, 17 May 2022 at the Hubrecht Institute in Utrecht. The focus of this masterclass will be on contemporary topics in nuclear organization. Sounds interesting? Please register here.
