From Discovery to Breakthrough: Our Research Strategy

Our Approach

We believe meaningful progress against cancer happens when bold ideas, diverse expertise and purposeful collaboration come together. That’s why we support scientific freedom while building strong foundations for collaboration across disciplines and institutions.

At Oncode Institute:

We Foster Complementary Expertise

Our 62 research groups unite leading scientists across genomics, chemical biology, tissue biology, organoid models, computational biology, artificial intelligence, engineering, immunology and clinical oncology. This diversity allows us to approach cancer biology from every angle.

We Promote Scientific Freedom

Through flexible, non-earmarked funding - our Base Research Funding - we empower our Oncode Investigators to pursue bold questions and ambitious, high-reward research that can reshape our understanding of cancer.

We Stimulate Collaboration

Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. We encourage cross-disciplinary partnerships and training. To achieve this, we actively connect researchers with patients, clinicians and industry partners to accelerate the path from discovery to real-world, patient impact.

Our Network for Discovery

Our 62 research groups form a dynamic and interconnected community across Oncode Institute’s 13 Dutch partner institutes. Selected for their scientific excellence and diverse expertise, these groups share knowledge and collaborate across disciplines to tackle cancer from multiple angles.

Our Support for Discovery and Collaboration

In addition to our research funding, we aim to support the community with a number of programmes, processes and activities, including:

  • Valorisation
  • Events
  • Training
  • Patient engagement programme
  • Clinical proof-of-concept programme

Open Science

We truly believe that knowledge should be shared. Therefore, Oncode Institute is committed to making science accessible - to both the scientific community and society. By embracing Open Science principles, including FAIR data management and open access publishing, we aim to increase the quality, reach and impact of science.
