With deep sadness, we say goodbye to Niels Heine, who passed away on December 28, 2024, at the age of 52 due to cancer. For 4.5 years, Niels was an invaluable patient partner in the Oncode Patient Perspective Programme, working closely with Peter ten Dijke’s research group. His curiosity and determination to better understand prostate cancer brought him to Oncode Institute. As a patient representative, he brought energy and a unique perspective that both inspired researchers and enriched their work.
Niels asked incisive questions, challenged scientists, and provided a valuable lens on living with cancer. He made the impact of fundamental research more tangible and underscored the importance of patient involvement in science. His collaboration with Peter ten Dijke and his team resulted in a special bond and highlighted the power of uniting science with personal experience.
Niels was an optimist, realistic about the time required for research but always hopeful. His inspiring conversations with researchers filled him with joy and motivation. His dedication and advocacy for patient perspectives continue to inspire us.
We remember Niels as a warm, engaged, and curious man who brought science and humanity closer together. Our thoughts are with his wife Thea, family, and loved ones during this difficult time.
