Oncode Investigators Jacco van Rheenen and Louis Vermeulen receive Vici grant

Oncode is proud to announce that Oncode Investigators Jacco van Rheenen (Netherlands Cancer Institute) and Louis Vermeulen (Amsterdam UMC) will both receive the Vici grant of 1.5 million euros from the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The Vici grant targets highly experienced researchers who have successfully demonstrated the ability to develop their own innovative lines of research, and to act as coaches for young researchers.

Jacco van Rheenen: Filming the birth of intestinal tumors for finding new prevention methods
Jacco explains: “Preventing colorectal cancer is better than curing this disease. In this project, we will film the early steps of tumorgenesis and identify factors that can be targeted to decreased this risk. These experiments have the potential to identify novel ways to prevent or revert the risk of developing colorectal cancer.”

Louis Vermeulen: Outcompeting Cancer – Prevention is better than cure
Louis says: “Cell competition plays an important role in cancer initiation. The focus of this project is to better understand and manipulate cell competition in the earliest stage of cancer development, to be able to prevent the disease. Future patient care of heritable cancer syndromes can be shifted from treatment to prevention.”

Geert Kops, head of Oncode Institute, adds: “The Vici grants for Jacco and Louis are a well-deserved recognition of their work and an impulse for their innovative research programs. We are very proud that they are part of our Oncode community.”
