Alpe d’HuZes is a unique sporting event that collects money for cancer research and improving the quality of life for people with cancer. In one day, 5000 participants will climb the Alpe d’Huez cycling, running, or walking up to six times. This year’s motto is: ‘giving up is not an option’.

We are very proud that part of our Oncode community is participating this year. Investigators Ruud Delwel, Wouter de Laat, Jop Kind, Madelon Maurice, Jan Paul Medema and Jacco van Rheenen are part of the team. In addition, Henk Verheul (chair of Oncode’s Clinical Advisory Board) and researchers Leonie Hartl, Simone van de Weerd and Roxan Helderman join the investigators at this event.

Jacco van Rheenen says: “By participating, I combine my two passions: my passion to contribute to cancer research and my passion to cycle in the Alpes. Cancer research is very important because only with more knowledge, we will find new ways to prevent and cure cancer.”

Wouter de Laat adds: “The Alpe d’HuZes is a fantastic initiative, annually raising lots of money for Dutch cancer research. I participate to support this initiative and the many volunteers that make this event possible. Cancer is one of the diseases we fear the most, for ourselves and our beloved ones. Research is needed to effectively fight cancer and take away this fear.”

Jan Paul Medema explains why this event means so much to him: "Alpe d’HuZes is for me best summarized by curve number 7. Battling your way up the mountain, you pass the many candles and the illuminated church of Huez, where there is a magical mix between a sport I love and the reason I ride up the mountain. The memory of loved ones that we all have lost to cancer or are still fighting cancer perfectly connects at this point with the joint efforts to raise money for research. When you look up you see the top of the mountain in front of you and you feel that the goal is within reach, which is to reduce the impact of this disease on all those affected."
