Two Oncode Institute Investigators elected EMBO Members

Oncode Investigators Leila Akkari and Puck Knipscheer have been elected as Members of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), one of the highest honours recognising excellence in the life sciences. Their election highlights both their outstanding scientific achievements and the strength of the collaborative research community within Oncode Institute.

Election to the EMBO Membership is a lifetime honour that recognises research excellence and exceptional achievements in the life sciences. Each year, existing EMBO Members elect scientists whose research has made a significant impact on their field.

With this year's election, the EMBO Membership brings together more than 2,200 leading researchers from Europe and around the world. EMBO Members contribute to the scientific community by serving on EMBO committees and advisory boards, reviewing funding applications and helping shape future research directions.

The election of Leila Akkari, Group Leader at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI), and Professor at Leiden University, and Puck Knipscheer, Group Leader at the Hubrecht Institute and Professor by Appointment at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), reflects the scientific excellence fostered across the Oncode community and its partner institutes.

As Oncode Investigators, Akkari and Knipscheer are advancing fundamental cancer research through complementary fields of expertise, contributing to a deeper understanding of cancer biology and the development of future therapies.

"Being elected to EMBO is a tremendous honor, one that feels personal as much as professional. It is a moment to pause and appreciate the path that led here, shaped by an inspiring scientific community, generous mentors, and by the incredible team of young scientists who walk it with me".

Puck Knipscheer, Oncode Investigator at Hubrecht Institute.

"I am truly honoured to be elected as an EMBO Member, and I look forward to contributing to and being part of this amazing European scientific community. I am grateful to the scientists who nominated me and supported my election. I am excited to join such an inspiring community of outstanding scientists, and I look forward to meeting the other members. I hope to contribute to EMBO's mission and help strengthen the European scientific community".

Akkari and Knipscheer are among the 71 scientists from 23 countries elected to the EMBO Membership in 2026.

Congratulations to Leila and Puck on this well-deserved recognition.
