In a resounding success, we finished 2023 with a fully booked live masterclass, delving into the intricate world of structural biology. Kindly organized by Oncode Investigators Titia Sixma and Anastassis Perrakis, this event was hosted at the NKI.
The masterclass aimed to equip attendees with a deep understanding of the methodologies employed in explaining the atomic resolution information of proteins and their complexes. The day was filled with well-received lectures from the organizers and their research teams, including a lecture from Danny Sahtoe (Hubrecht Institute) on protein design for drug discovery. Danny is poised to join Oncode Institute as a junior investigator in 2024.
The diverse range of topics covered during the masterclass included protein production and quality control, characterization of macromolecules and their interactions, and an insightful overview of X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), and Artificial Intelligence methods, such as the revolutionary AlphaFold approach. Participants gained valuable insights into cutting-edge technologies that hold the key to unlocking the mysteries of protein structures. This holistic approach, from theoretical concepts to practical applications, highlighted the comprehensive nature of the masterclass.

Hans Wienk, in the final presentation, introduced the NKI Protein Facility and provided an overview of opportunities in European infrastructures. Following the informative presentations, attendees had the opportunity to explore the NKI facilities for crystallisation, biophysics, and the cryo-EM facilities. Once again, this masterclass has set a high standard, affirming our commitment to delivering top-tier education and fostering innovation in the dynamic field of structural biology.
In the spirit of knowledge sharing, all presentations from the event are available on request, ensuring that the insights gained during this masterclass extend beyond its duration.
Hereby, we'd like to thank the organizers, speakers and attendees for executing another successful masterclass. For further masterclasses, please keep an eye on our Event Page.
